Frequently asked questions

A wireless LAN (WLAN) is a type of Local Area Network (LAN) that uses radio frequency waves to transmit data through the air.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a global community of engineers, practitioners and academics working together to advance communication technology. The wireless IEEE standards 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11a, 802.11n, 802.11ac and 802.11ax are the industry specifications used to define the operation of a Wireless Network.

In today’s wireless networks 802.11n, 802.11ac, 802.11ax is are the three widely used standards.

Protocol Frequency Theoretical Max data rate
802.11ax 2.4 or 5Ghz 2.4 Gbps
802.11ac wave2 5Ghz 1.7 Gbps
8021.11ac wave1 5Ghz 866 Mbps
802.11n 2.4 or 5GHz 450 Mbps

Wireless communication, Point-to-Multiple (P2MP, PTMP or PMP) is a communication which is accomplished by multiple types of one-to-many connections. This is achieved by multiple paths from a single access point to multiple access point in different locations. A base station as a central antenna broadcasts to several receiving stations or antennas.

A Point-to-Point connection (P2P) refers to a wireless connection between two access points or stations. The two access points or stations communicate using bidirectional traffic flow through the air. A Point-To-Point connection is usually used to connect to buildings together via a wireless link.

An access point is a hardware device that creates a wireless local area network and broadcasts a Service Set Identifier (SSID), or a wireless name. An access point connects to a wired infrastructure usually a switch via an Ethernet cables. Access points can be Autonomous or Lightweight which stipulates what the AP can do locally within the hardware.

An autonomous (FAT) AP is an access point that handles all the wireless traffic, including needing to be manually configured. An autonomous AP is usually used in small office deployments where the AP count doesn’t exceed more than a handful.

A lightweight or thin AP is controlled by a Wireless Lan Controller which manages the basic operation. All configuration can be centralised, and bulk changes can be made to the environment which usually save IT staff time and money. A lightweight AP deployment is usually used in a branch or enterprise wireless solution.

2.4Ghz travels father, but at lower speeds, while 5Ghz frequencies travel short distances but provide faster speeds compared to 2.4Ghz.
